When gallstones are persistently troublesome, doctors often recommend removing the organ entirely. This operation is considered among the safest of all surgical procedures.
Each year approximately , Americans have their gallbladder removed. It is also the only treatment method that eliminates the possibility that other gallstones will develop in the future. When the gallbladder has been removed, bile flows directly from the liver into the small intestine, and this sometimes leads to diarrhea. Because bile no longer accumulates in the gallbladder, quantities of the digestive fluid cannot be stored up and used to break down an especially fatty meal.
This condition is not considered serious, however, and can be corrected by simply limiting fat in the diet. In the past, removal of the gallbladder was done through traditional "open" surgery, which requires surgeons to make a large incision in the abdomen.
Patients faced a two- or three-day hospital stay plus several weeks of recovery at home. Today, however, the most commonly used surgical technique is a much simpler approach known as laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The doctor makes several small incisions in the abdomen, then uses special pencil-thin instruments to remove the gallbladder. A tiny microscope and video camera, snaked through the incision to the site, allow the surgeon to view the operation. Laparoscopic surgery is highly effective and very safe.
It has reduced the hospital stay to a day or two. Patients report less pain and are generally able to resume a normal lifestyle in a short period of time. However, people who are obese or who have a severe infection or inflammation in the gallbladder may still be considered candidates for traditional open surgery.
Continued Nonsurgical Therapy for Gallstones If you are unable or unwilling to go through surgery for a gallstone problem that requires treatment, your doctor may recommend one of several noninvasive techniques. Kimchi is Korean fermented cabbage. It is usually spicy tasting. It makes a great side with all kinds of dishes, and is loaded with live enzymes and probiotics. I do buy these in organic. I get them at Hannaford sometimes as well. They are NOT soaked in chlorine from either place-they are simply tumbled carrots. I choose to put my time and energy into other things. I spend a ton of time preparing food, and prefer to toss a few of these into lunches with minimal work.
I do not buy these in organic. I eat a banana before I go for a run, and the kids like to have one as a bedtime snack. I usually buy 2 bunches of them a week. If they get to brown I freeze them and use them for baking.
Some other produce that I typically purchase include kale for making kale chips and I occasionally juice it , brussel sprouts typically as a side dish roasted in bacon fat onions for roasts and I caramelize them for burgers, cilantro for guacamole, basil for seasoning ground meat, cherry tomatoes kiddos snack on them , mangoes kids LOVE mango , and a coconut kids love to crack them open.
I do not buy a whole lot of squash as no one here likes to eat it. I occasionally roast butternut squash and eat it myself. Spaghetti squash is great to have with meatballs and sauce! Right now they mainly have things like squash and potatoes, but come summer I will get things like zucchini, greens, sprouts etc…as much as I can locally. I also typically buy and use medjool dates.
I use them to make snacks with in the food processor, and for energy before or after I go for a run. We consume a ton of grass-fed ground beef. Literally like pounds a week sometimes even 4. It sounds like a lot of beef when you have most likely been led to believe that beef is bad. It is what I use the most of, so I always make sure it is grass-fed and grass finished.

First of all chickens are not vegetarians. Chickens eat bugs, and that makes for nutritious chicken with the right fat profile. This makes the fatty acid profile less than desirable.
Would I recommend some consumption of bacon that originates from pastured pigs fed an omnivorous diet that does not contain grain. My definition of a good diet is one that is comprised of meat from grass-fed or pastured animals, vegetables, roots, tubers, and bulbs with limited fruit, nut, seed, and fermented dairy consumption and no grain, legume or milk consumption.
I do so only when I have the extra money in the budget. I usually marinade and grill the salmon. My kids love salmon, but do not like white fish…go figure. You can also remove the meat from the skin and make salmon burgers! Applegate Farms Organic Hotdogs: These little devils are great for lunches…I have a love hate relationship with them.
However, when feeding 2 hungry kids and running low on ideas I am thrilled to have found them! They make my life easier for mama. I fry them with a little grass-fed butter, cut them up on a plate and serve them with veggies and fruits on the side. Applegate Farms Deli Ham: Same idea as the hotdogs above-still a processed meat-but humane methods and no junk in it. I personally have never been a ham fan, lol. The taste is good-again, not fishy at all. They are one of the most concentrated sources of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which have been found to lower triglycerides; one serving 3. Vitamin B12 promotes cardiovascular well-being since it is intricately tied to keeping levels of homocysteine in balance; homocysteine can damage artery walls, with elevated levels being a risk factor for atherosclerosis. They make for good weekend lunches served with sauerkraut and a veggie. We literally go through 3 dozen eggs a week.
I also make a frittata once a week. Because we consume so many eggs I make sure they a re pasture raised eggs. Occasionally I purchase kerrygold brand grassfed cheeses from Ireland. Again, the fat profile is completely different than butter from grain and soy fed cows. You can also make ghee with it by heating it and separating the fat from the protein. Ghee is the butter fat left after all the proteins have been removed. It is very gentle on the gut. I go through a jar a week.

If it used to cluck, moo, or oink… you can eat it! Red meat, poultry, pork, and seafood are all great for a ketogenic diet.
The organ meats of each are fantastic as well. Breadcrumbs and batter often have flour and other carb-loaded ingredients. Honey and sugars are the main ingredients used to cure meat… watch the carb counts on these meats, they tend to add up quickly. Glazes are packed with sugar and a lot of traditional sauces use cornstarch or flour as thickening agents. Some processed meats have starchy fillers added to stretch the product. Keep an eye out for this!
Vegetables are awesome on a ketogenic diet, but they can be a little tricky sometimes. While vegetables do have carbohydrates, a lot of that can be chalked up to fiber. They are a great source of vitamins and nutrients, so be sure to eat your veggies! The veggies listed below are just a taste of low carb veggies. Be sure to check out my searchable, sortable keto vegetable list for a comprehensive overview! Certain types of dairy can be enjoyed on the keto diet! Butter, cheese, full fat yogurts and heavy cream — this is not your typical diet fare!
When eating dairy, you will generally want to choose ingredients that have a lower amount of lactose. Lactose is a sugar that will spike your blood sugar. You will want to stay away from milk, as it is full of lactose aka sugar!
And of course, if you have lactose intolerance you should avoid dairy altogether. When you remove fat, you destroy the natural flavor and completely change the consistency. Food companies use sugar to make up for it. Fat is not inherently bad. Some people find that dairy stalls their weight loss.
Dairy sensitivities are very common, so you may need to revisit how much dairy you are eating if you notice any issues. Fats are fuel for the keto diet! Seriously, I mean it! This includes fat from your body and fat from your plate.
Check out my post What Are Macros? Contrary to popular belief, fat bombs, bulletproof coffee and the like are not fundamental for a ketogenic diet. While you certainly want to eat fat on the keto diet, calories still matter. Avoid processed vegetable oils, margarine, and trans fatty acids as they can be damaging to your health. Water and broth are best , hands down. You need to stay hydrated and manage your electrolyte balance when getting into ketosis or you will not feel very good.
Water and broth will help you do this! I would recommend sticking to water and broth to start with and gradually adding in other drinks when you need variety. While coffee, diet pop and booze are all low in carbs, caffeine and alcohol are known diuretics.
If you choose to drink these, it may be more challenging to stay hydrated. When you do choose to drink alcohol, beware that the keto diet significantly lowers your alcohol tolerance level. Stick to one or two drinks tops! Even if you could drink someone under the table before, you will severely regret overdoing it while in ketosis.
Consider this your warning! Yes, you can have fruit on the keto diet. Fruit is naturally sweet and that means it has carbohydrates that need to be accounted for. If and when you choose to eat fruit, measure your intake before you grab a handful and shove it into your mouth. Just like veggies, starchy fruits should be avoided.
Still iffy about certain fruits? Double check the carbohydrate counts in a nutrition database to make sure your fruit of choice is not too sugary.
